3 out of 5 stars because the ramen with chicken that I ordered needed more pizazz, & I opted to eat-in & the owner provided me with a plastic soup spoon.
Though the food filled me, I expected a bit more perhaps then, it would be easy to support a locally- & family-run restaurant. -

I had some very fresh sushi from here the other day! The staff were friendly and it was a very nice home cooked meal. Can't wait to come back again!

I really wanted to give this place a good review because the staff are so nice and the prices are very reasonable (especially considering it is in the Byward Market). However, the shrimp in my Pad Thai did not taste fresh at all, and my husband and I both had stomachaches after eating here :(
We went here for lunch. I had the Seafood Pad Thai ($7.95) and my husband had the Chicken Teriyaki ($6.50). We also had a bottle of water ($1) - I like that they don't price gouge you on drinks. The portions were a really good size.
They asked me how spicy I wanted my Pad Thai. I said "medium," but I should have said "mild" because the "medium" was really spicy. I loved that the Pad Thai had vegetables in it (bok choy and red and yellow peppers), although I realize that some purists might object to this. The seafood in the Pad Thai were shrimp, fish cake slices, and imitation crab sticks. There were 3 smallish shrimps and they did not taste fresh. They tasted soft and boggy. The fish cake and imitation crab sticks were good (for what they are). There was a rogue piece of chicken in my Pad Thai (not complaining at all, I wish there was more). There was no egg that I could see or taste and no tofu. The Pad Thai was very "saucy" (as in too much sauce, not as in lippy and talked back at me) and too wet for my liking.
My husband's Chicken Teriyaki came with white rice and a small side salad (iceberg lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes with a creamy salad dressing). Surprisingly the Teriyaki sauce was not too salty. My husband thought the taste was good. I thought it was acceptable, but nothing special. The rice was done well, not too mushy nor too dry.
Shortly after lunch we both had stomachaches and felt sick. I cannot say for sure that the food here caused our symptoms, but I am a bit hesitant to eat here again now. I should say that I have eaten here before several years ago and did not feel sick afterwards (I had had the Chicken Udon Soup, which was unremarkable and that is why I hadn't returned for several years).
The staff are nice and our food arrived in a timely manner. I may try again in a few years... -

One of the two sushi shops in Byward Market area that we noticed. This one was not a chain so decided to check it out. It was a huge disappointment. The rolls were too "vinegary" tasting since the rice is made with vinegar and made with too much rice. Unfortunately didn't take a picture. The California Roll only had the crab and brownish avocado no cucumber. The other sushi that was topped with seafood was full of rice. Could barely finish the few pieces we had because it was not appetizing at all. Quite suprised about the poor quality considering its part of Byward Market main Building. Skip this place.

Sushi Zone offers unmemorable, inexpensive take-out sushi in the Byward market. Like most of the take-out sushi places in Ottawa, the rolls are inconsistent. Ive had acceptable food here, but generally it's a bit of a crap shoot. they offer all the sushi staples of maki, hosomaki nigiri and sashimi. Thei vegetarian options are somewhat limited.
The last time I went to Sushi Zone, I was picking up a platter for a party. I decided to eat a piece while my ride looked for parking. To my horror, the tuna in the maki I grabbed was frozen solid. Thought it as just a fluke and tried a piece of salmon, which was also frozen solid. I ended up not taking the platter and instead ordering from Sushi Fresh.
